The nails actually say a lot about the overall health. For that reason, it is important to learn how to recognize the signs that can save your life. The nails can show you if you are suffering from some disease and here are some health hazards you can notice on the nails:

*Thickened nails*

If the nails are thickened, it can indicate circulatory problems or lung disease. If they are rough in texture and thick, it can indicate fungal infection, while thick and separated nails can be caused by thyroid disorders and psoriasis. Also, some medications can cause allergic reactions which can thicken the nails.

*Discoloration*

A nail should be pink with white bed (lunula) in the base. White nails can indicate hepatitis, blue nails can indicate low levels of oxygen in the blood, red streaks on the bed (lunula) indicate heart valve infections. The green nails can indicate bacterial infection, dark stripes can indicate congestive heart failure and dull colored nails can be caused by deficiency in vitamins.

*Concave nails*

The spooned nails can indicate hypothyroidism, iron deficiency, hemochromatosis or heart disease. When you find the underlying condition, the nails should be back normal.

*Split nails*

This abnormality happens as a result of protein and vitamin C deficiency or malnutrition of folic acid. If you also notice pitted nail bed, it may indicate psoriasis.

*Ridges*

This abnormality is a bad sign, as it indicates arthritis, lupus or iron deficiency.

*Pitted nails*

This abnormality indicates some kind of ailments and experts relate it to connective tissue disorders, alopecia areata, zinc deficiency or psoriasis.

*Clubbed nails*

This is associated to AIDS, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease or lung disease. You should visit a doctor if you notice this abnormality.

*Dry/brittle nails*

This is linked to the hormone levels and the bacterial health in the body. It is linked to thyroid disorders or fungal infections. It may take time to be treated and it won’t improve for some time.
